Day 4 - Trademarks of the Kingdom
“The kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Romans 14:17).
Toward the end of his letter to the church in Rome, Paul addresses a conflict between those with a robust sense of Christian liberty, and those whose sense of liberty was for whatever reason more restrictive. He does not side with one group over the other, but he does explain that the trademarks of the kingdom are not what we partake in or abstain from. Rather the trademarks of the God’s influence upon our lives are things such as righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
The degree to which God’s rule has advanced within our lives will be made evident the presence of these trademarks. If righteousness, peace or joy are in short supply, I can correctly conclude that in corresponding areas within my life God has yet to establish His rule. The good news in such a case is that the prophet explained that of the increase of (Christ’s) governance there would be no end (Isaiah 9:7).
Abraham Kuyper, a Dutch politician, journalist and statesman said, “There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ does not cry, ‘Mine!’” Proverbs 30:16 lists four things that are never satisfied: the grave, the barren womb, the desire of the earth for water, and fire. Similarly Jesus is never satisfied with the degree to which He rules in your life. He never says, “Enough!” He will see the trademarks of His kingdom evident in you.
Questions for Consideration:
What other trademarks of the kingdom does the Bible describe?
What are some areas in my life where a kingdom trademark is missing?
What action can I take today to see the advance of God’s kingdom in my life?
